Description
View of the theater at Petra, Jordan. "The theatre ... is typically Roman in its plan and general arrangement, and has long been considered as one of the civic improvements which the Romans undertook soon after A.D. 106 ... Like the majority of Roman theatres it was in two distinct parts, the cavea of the auditorium and the stage wall or scaenae frons. In this case the cavea, which could hold between 3,000-4,000 people in thirty-three rows of seats, was carved deeply into the steep hillside, whilst the scaenae frons was constructed with dressed stone,"--Petra by Iain Browning, London: Chatto & Windus, 1989.
