Description
View of rock-cut tombs along the Street of Facades in Petra, Jordan. "The early architectural style of Petra ... particularly as used in the monumental-carved facades, was just such a hybrid, being a direct descendant from the work of the Neo-Babylonian craftsmen who went to western Arabia with King Nabonidus up to 539 B.C., but who never returned ... one of the strangest conglomerations of monuments in Petra, the so-called Streets of Facades ... they form the most remarkable collection of Assyrian I and II facades in Petra. It is not possible to date this area and these facades but it seems likely that they are among the earlier works of the Nabateans"--Petra by Iain Browning, London: Chatto & Windus, 1989.
