Description
View of boar mosaic at an entrance to the House of Vesbinus in Pompeii, Italy. "...in general the boar didn't carry the same symbolic and practical weight for the Romans that it did for Celtic and Germanic tribes. While the Romans, like the Greeks and Celts, used domestic animals in religious sacrifices, boars played their part in bloody arena spectacles where different species fights were staged among elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, tigers, leopards, and wolves ... In Roman art boars were rendered most often in hunting scenes and illustrations of Greek myths assimilated into Roman theology,"--The Golden-Bristled Boar: Last Ferocious Beast of the Forest, by Jeffrey Greene.
