Description
View of the tribunal at Pompeii, Italy. "At the furthest end (of the forum] was raised the tribunal for the ... judge, which must have been ascended by wooden steps: it is decorated with small columns, between which, at the back, were small apertures and at the sides closets, probably for robes of office. Beneath were temporary dungeons for the accused and there are two holes in the floor through which orders were transmitted to the person in charge of the prisoners,"--Pompeii, edited by Thomas Henry Dyer.
