Description

Detail view of a betyl beside a section of the original Nabatean pavement through the Siq, in Petra, Jordan. "The Nabataeans observed what is called "aniconism" ... in the veneration and representation of their deities.
Aniconism means that rather than using figural images
as objects of worship, symbolic forms such as standing stones are taken as the representation of the deity ... The Nabataean betyls do not correspond to those described by Philo. Rather than round, black stones, they are stelae or shaped slabs raised in relief. But since they too are aniconic sacred stones, in modern research the term "betyl" is associated with these types of monuments"--The Betyls of Petra, by Robert Wenning, in Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research 324, 2001, S. 79-95.
