Description
View of the Siq at one its narrowest points as one enters the city of Petra, Jordan. "The Siq is the result of a natural fault which ran right through the mountain. In the darkness of time, huge, subterranean forces started pushing upwards with violent energy, trying to lift the mountain up. It cracked down the fault and split apart ... Towards the end, the Siq becomes very narrow, deep and dark. The walls come close to creating a twilight gloom. Then a thin, vertical strip of contorting daylight is seen ahead. Framed by the black walls of the Siq is part of a classical facade"--Petra by Iaian Browning, London: Chatto & Windus, 1989.
