Description
View of phallus in relief outside of a shop at Pompeii, Italy. "...archaeologists working at Pompeii came upon a terracotta phallus, eighteen inches long and jutting from a building wall ... Beside the phallus was the inscription, "hic habitat felicitas" (here dwells happiness). Happiness and phallus it seemed to say were one. Once excavated, the building turned out to be an ordinary bakery, and the phallus a charm intended to bring good luck and wealth ... These good luck phalluses, which have been found on building walls in many a Roman city, were popular with shop owners, and may also have been placed on a wall outside the family store to protect it from the envy of rival shop keepers,"--Pompeii Awakened: A Story of Rediscovery, by Judith Harris.
