Description
View of the four towers of the General Motors Building in Detroit, MI, designed by Albert Kahn and completed c. 1922. “…this monumental structure is perhaps Albert Kahn’s personal masterpiece in commercial architecture. Here neoclassical refinement followed Sullivan’s three-part skyscraper formula to be sure, with an Italian Renaissance arcade that engages the street, a finely proportioned shaft, and a Corinthian colonnaded crown … Four identical cross-wings extend from the central backbone, which is subtly expressed in the end elevations. This configuration enabled each of the hundreds of individual offices to enjoy natural light, ventilation, and views,”--AIA Detroit: The American Institute of Architects Guide to Detroit Architecture, by Eric J. Hill and John Gallagher, 2003. Handwritten on back of photograph: GM, printed: Hedrich-Blessing Studio, 450 East Ohio Street, Chicago Neg. no. 8661-F.
