Description

View of the entrance and 13-foot tower of the Free Press building in Detroit, MI, designed by Albert Kahn and completed in 1923, with limestone reliefs designed by Ulysses Ricci, "In 1923 Kahn built a new headquarters for the Detroit Free Press ... steel construction was preferable to the bulkier reinforced concrete, but the same use of monumental limestone on the exterior was continued. A new element may be noted, however, in the massing of the building in a central thirteen-story tower with lower six-story wings,"--The Buildings of Detroit: A History, by W. Hawkins Ferry, Wayne State University Press, 1980, p. 333. Handwritten on back of photograph: Free Press, printed: Hedrich-Blessing Studio, 450 East Ohio Street, Chicago Neg. no. 8661-Z.
