Description
View of jaguar statue on platform at the Temple of the Jaguars in Chichen Itza, Mexico. “The jaguar was sacred to the ancient Maya, who placed it at the center of their mythology. To them, the jaguar lived in the underworld each night, only to be reborn each day as the Sun god, who traveled across the sky during the day and descended once again. The spots on the jaguar’s skin came to represent the stars of the night sky,”-- Jungle of the Maya, By Douglas Goodell, Jerry Barrack, Jim Wright, 2006.
