Description

Front view of abstract sculpture by Louise Nevelson at the Meijer Sculpture Gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan. "Nevelson worked as a painter, printmaker, and ceramicist, but sculpture is her most important and enduring legacy. Initially she composed exclusively with discarded pieces of wood, but later in her career began to work with steel in order to place work outdoors. This piece is one of a series of structures based on gardens and natural environments. Nevelson traditionally painted her sculptures in one color, usually black, to unify the composition. This sculpture is most effective when viewed from different angles as the screen appears to open and close when one walks around it"--Meijer Sculpture Gardens website.
