Description
View of covered bridge at Heian Shrine in Kyoto, Japan. "Heian Jingu was built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of moving the capital to Heiankyo (present day Kyoto). The large compound consists of an approximately two-thirds scale reproduction of the third great Hall of State (Daigokunden), constructed in 1072 on the original palace grounds. The impressive structures, surrounded on three sides by connected gardens, provide a glimpse of some of the characteristics of a Heian Period Shinden style complex,"--The Art of the Japanese Garden, by David Young, Michiko Young.
