Description
View of one of the gardens at Heian Shrine in Kyoto, Japan. "The purpose of the garden was not to create a Heian period pleasure garden but to provide a large area where visitors could stroll after worshiping at the shrine. Construction of the gardens designed by Ogawa [Jihei] was begun in 1894 and completed in 1913, the second year of the Showa period. The fourth garden, south of the West Garden, is the Heian Garden (or South Garden). Completed in 1968, it features plants mentioned in Heian period literature, such as the Tale of the Genji,"--The Art of the Japanese Garden, by David Young, Michiko Young.
