Exterior view of small garden and trees in front of unidentified building at the Eiheiji Temple Complex in Japan. "A Japanese temple complex is generally made up of a number of buildings, each with its prescribed purpose, situated purposefully in relationship to one another. The most classical form can be seen at the temple, "Eiheiji of Eternal Peace," one of the two head temples of the Soto Zen sect. The temple was founded in 1244 by Dogen Zenji who brought both Zen Buddhism and the knowledge of the classical Chinese Buddhist, Eiheiji home to Japan after training in Zen Buddhism in China,"--Zen Architecture: The Building Process as Practice by Gibbs Smith.
