Description

View of one of the gates at the Horyuji temple precinct in Nara, Japan. "Founded by Prince Shotoku, Horyuji was built in 607, burned in 670, and was rebuilt a few years later (date uncertain). In the original compound the Main Hall was lined up behind the pagoda … breaking the symmetry of the original layout. When the Horyuji was rebuilt the pagoda was placed to the left of the Main Hall,"--The Art of Japanese Architecture, by David Young, Michiko Young.
