View of raked gravel garden with open sides but covered at the Kasuga Grand Shrine in Nara, Japan. "… before the rising ground leading to the inner most shrine buildings is a cypress-bark-roofed structure without walls and with a dirt floor. This is the Haiden (Offertory) which traditionally stands before the inner shrine and where offerings and religious services to the gods are held,"--Nara: A Cultural Guide to Japan's Ancient Capital, by John H.
