Description
Detail view of reconstructed frieze of archers and lions at Susa in Iran. "The archers, who are shown in left or right profile, must have converged toward a central element bearing a trilingual inscription. Rather than a flat surface the frieze probably adorned a facade of projecting pilasters alternating with recessed niches, a traditional method of decoration in the near east,"--The Royal City of Susa: Ancient Near Eastern Treasures in the Louvre, edited by Prudence Oliver Harper, Joan Aruz, Françoise Tallon, Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.).
