Bird's eye view of the Piazza Navona in Rome, Italy. "Piazza Navona is city square in Rome, Italy that occupies the site of an ancient Roman circus and was the site of the 1st century (86 AD) Stadium of Domitian where the Romans came to watch the agones ("games"). The Roman circus was initially known as 'Circus Agonalis' ("competition arena"). Later the name changed to 'in agone' to 'navone' and eventually to 'navona',"--by Rebecca Williams, Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst website.
