Description
View of the Arch of Marcus Aurelius in Tripoli, Libya. "It stood near the port, at the crossing of the cardo and the town's northern most decumanus. The northeast side, which faces the harbor, and the southwest are treated alike, with projecting composite columns, and statue-niches in the piers ... The northwest and southeast faces also make a pair; the piers bear barbarian families grouped around trophies ... A cupola roofed the arch. Diagonal blocks with floral motifs carved on the underside reduce the square -- 14.5 meters a side -- to an octagon for the cupola to rest on,"--The North African Stones Speak, by Paul Lachlan MacKendrick.
