Description

View of section of frieze of the First Dacian War on Trajan's column in Rome, Italy thought to have been designed by Apollodorus of Damascus. "The sequence begins with a Dacian embassy of noblemen who are received by the emperor; meanwhile a group of civilians watches the construction of a Roman fort, perhaps located in Moesia. This is quickly followed by a major battle against Dacian forces that ends in a rout. The emperor speaks to his troops afterwards and Dacian prisoners are exhibited; Roman soldiers are given rewards. This group of scenes ends with the depiction of men being tortured by women, the latter traditionally identified as Dacian women (war widows?) maltreating captured Roman soldiers,"--from Trajan's Column in Rome, Dartmouth College website.
