Description
An account of the resource
Exterior view of bell banner and narthex at St. Francis de Sales church in Muskegon, Michigan designed by Marcel Breuer and Herbert Beckhard and completed in 1967. "The trapezoidal-shaped front wall of the church acts as a “banner” or signage with a large concrete cross on it similar to the way the Whitney Museum’s large concrete façade serves as a sign for the museum. Above this is the bell tower with three large bells protruding over the front wall. The side walls are double curved in parabolic sections with the back wall splaying towards the top. Breuer used the latest technology of the time, reinforced concrete, to create a continuous curved line, which was previously impossible because of the lack of technology,"--Architectuul website.

An account of the resource
Exterior view of footpath leading up to the bell banner at St. John's Abbey Church in Collegeville, Minnesota designed by Marcel Breuer and completed in 1961. "Standing before the entrance to the church, the bell banner is a keynote for the building, establishing the principal underlying theme of the whole structure. It is 110' tall and 100' wide at its top edge, east to west ... The banner's architectural form recalls early mission churches in the Southwest. Its tremendous concrete slab, cantilevered on parabolic cross vaults, is pierced by two large "windows," the upper one framing a laminated white oak cross harvested from the nearby abbey forest, fabricated by abbey carpenters, and stands 12' tall by 7' wide,"--St. John's Abbey Church Tour (pdf) from St. John's Abbey church website.

Description
An account of the resource
View of the Palazzo Public and Torre del Mangia in Siena, Italy. "The Palazzo Pubblico, complete with chapel and meeting rooms, once housed the Podestà and the Council; today it is a kind of town hall. Made of red brick (typical of Siena) with a travertine base, it presents the image of a fortress, "but, where a working fortress would have real machicolations, this civic fortress has only heavy corbels resembling machicolations" (Norman 41). The blind arcade on the ground level suggests commercialism rather than fortification as well ... Torre del Mangia, a tall bell-tower--102M to the tip of the ironwork, was built between 1325-44. The tallest tower in the city," by Mary Ann Sullivan, Blufton University.

"This was the last of the three parts of the cathedral complex to be designed and even it was altered from Giotto's original design by Andrea Pisano, who worked on the bell tower after Giotto's death. (Giotto died three years after it was begun.) The free-standing tower gives an image of power," Mary Ann Sullivan, Bluffton University.
