Goodbye 72
This book is dedicated to the many people
who have helped us thru this year and to ourselves
for effectively using that help.
EDITORIAL
SYNTOPICON is a collection of topics and was first coined by
Mortimer J. Adler, a professor and author at the University of Chicago,
to describe the listing of topics discussed in Great Books of the Western
World. We use the word as a pictorial collection of topics and events
that happened at Lawrence Institute of Technology over the past year.
We hope that if you were a part of Lawrence Institute this year, it will
remind you of what you participated in. If you were not part of it,
then maybe this book will give you an in-sight to life at Lawrence
Institute.
This year is also the fortieth year of the founding of Lawrence
Institute. The preceding page is a kodalith picture of the original
College, which was started in Highland Park, in 1932. Today, we are
in Southfield and we have a new future to look forward to and to build
for. What we are in the future will be determined by what we do
today. We can look back at the past and remember our history, but
we can not live in it. To go ahead and move ahead into the future will
take courage and stamina. Courage to remember past mistakes but not
fear them; courage to make new mistakes and still survive. Stamina to
not deter from our chosen course; stamina to withstand obstacles that
seem insurmountable. We can see future trends or movements in
business and industry, in the professions and in Society. We must be
ready for these trends and movements, and the best way is by education. Therefore, if Lawrence Institute is prepared or can be prepared
for this new and exciting future, it will have a great role.

EDUCATION
In all profitable thinking about modem education one central fact is stated or
assumed - the fact that education has become a public enterprise
Education is a
common concern not merely because there are many children to be educated, but
because there can be no significant outcome in the education of any child which is not of
importance, not to him only, but also to others, immediately to many, more remotely to
all
This has always been true. Modern life, with cities and the inventions which
belittle time and space, has only made it more apparent and action upon it more pressing.
No one can think with penetration upon the results of education who does not come at
last to a fuller vision of the interdependence of men. That men shall live less and less each
for himself, more and more each for the common good, is not merely a consequence of
increasing numbers on the earth, but an essential condition of human progress, in the
individual as well as in society. It is a poor and meager culture which does not end in
greater power to serve. To become a man is to become capable of living effectively with
others and for all, in the normal relationships of life -- not in subservience to custom,
but in devotion to a welfare lai^er than one's own, a welfare at least not incompatible,
in the end, with the welfare of the world. I t is not enough to say that the common
interest is at stake in the education of every child; the very process of education is
properly a training for effective membership in the common life.

DR. EDWIN 0. GRAEFFE
A Memorial
The family, colleagues, graduates and former students of Lawrence Institute of Technology today pay
tribute to Dr. Edwin O. Graeffe. His distinctive, booming voice cajoling, chiding, challenging, needling
students will no longer be heard. In the silence comes the reflection of many, " I f it hadn't been for 'Doc'
I wouldn't have made i t . He wouldn't let me quit."
Students enjoyed having him at their affairs. The alumni appreciated him. He was given honorary life
membership m the L.I.T. Alumni Association.
Doctor Graeffe was a cosmopolitan figure, born in Belgium of a German father and an English mother.
He earned advance degrees in international law at two German universities, Goettingen and Tuebingen.
He travelled widely. He was well read. The sport of fencing caught his fancy. He bore the scars
on both cheeks because he was ambidextrous. His enthusiasm for the sport was transmitted to the students
he coached for ten years. He ardently followed other sports as well.
Stories, many stories, he told and retold, well. Even when he told the same story and people knew
what was coming, they relished his telling it again.
Dr. Graeffe's concern for students and their success prompted him to work on an expansion of the
curriculum which developed into the School of Industrial Management. He set the direction of that
school on the L.I.T. campus.
We have recorded the 38 years Dr. Graeffe devoted to Lawrence Institute of Technology before his
retirement. He served the College well from its beginning. His students will remember with affection
the firmness and determination with which his counsel and encouragement were given. But it remains
for the family to hold in memory the beloved husband, the respected father and the cherished brother.
They will remember how much he gave hunself to the cause of makmg Lawrence Institute of Technology
a good College on its way to becoming great. We shall remember bun well.
