Acquisition Information: The Albert Kahn Library and its contents was gifted to
Lawrence Technological University in the late 1970’s no further additions to the
collection are anticipated.
Access Restrictions: The collection is open to research.
Copyright: Copyright remains with Lawrence Technological University.
Background information: Albert Kahn was born in Rhaunen, Germany in 1869 and
moved with his family to Detroit, Michigan when he was 11 years old. To help the
family, Kahn went to work as a teen for the architecture firm of Mason & Rice where
he began as an office assistant but due to his abilities soon became a draftsman. In
1891, Kahn won a scholarship to tour Europe and in 1895, he founded his own firm,
Albert Kahn Associates, the firm remains in business today. Kahn attracted the
attention of Detroit auto industry executives such as Henry Ford and his firm became
the preeminent industrial designers in the United States with the help of his brothers,
Julius and Moritz who unlike Kahn attended university and became engineers. With a
large office in Detroit and established relationships with local industry leaders, Kahn
Associates was strategically placed to become one of the major forces in America’s war
readiness strategy, labeled “The Arsenal of Democracy” by Franklin Roosevelt. Albert
Kahn’s willingness to send employees to Russia in the late 1920’s to build tractor
factories, which later transformed into tank factories vastly improved Russia’s war
readiness, which historians believe was crucial to the Allied victory. Albert Kahn died
in 1942.
Scope and Content: Two rooms that made up Albert Kahn’s office in the early 1940’s
were removed from Albert Kahn Associates and reassembled in Lawrence
Technological University’s library. This included paneling, windows and the contents
of the library itself with over 3,000 books and journals (all cataloged on OCLC). Series
I of the archival collection includes scrapbooks, idea books, which contain mostly
images of architecture, furniture, plasterwork, art, etc… but also articles from
journals. Series II contains the photographic portfolios of finished buildings with both
interior and exterior images as well as loose photographs. The archival materials
housed in the Albert Kahn Library are stored in enclosed bookshelves, separated from
the print materials.
Arrangement: In order to keep the Albert Kahn collection in tact the archival materials
are housed in the same glass enclosed shelves as the print collection but in separate
shelving units. They are arranged by material type in the two series of scrapbooks and
photographs.
