Description
View of the back of the Temple of the Initial Series in Tulum, Mexico. “This building originally housed a stela, found broken into pieces, that had a date corresponding to A.D. 564. Since this is a date of the Initial Series calculation, the structure was named from the stela … Knowing that the building was constructed many centuries after this date, one can only guess that the stela was moved to Tulum from some ceremonial center … The Temple of the Initial Series … has walls punctuated by open windows. At one time the temple … had a stucco facade, but little remains today,”—A Guide to Ancient Maya Ruins, by C. Bruce Hunter, 1986.
