View of aqueduct at Pompeii, Italy. "The water-supply system in the final years of Pompeii was quite sophisticated. It consisted of an aqueduct, three large pressure mains, fourteen water towers, and secondary and tertiary water mains. The castellum aquae or the water castle, had the function of dividing the incoming water into the three water mains,"--The World of Pompeii, edited by Pedar Foss, John J. Dobbins.
