Description
View of street in Pompeii, Italy. "The streets of Pompeii vary greatly in width, from 2.4 to 4.5 meters wide, while the widest is just over 7 meters. These streets were paved with large polygonal blocks of Vesuvian lava. On either side of most streets there was a raised sidewalk, usually about one third of a meter high, but sometimes much more ... The road was usually raised in the center so that water would run into the gutters ... Pompeii had no proper sewage system and much of the waste must have been thrown into the gutter. Large stepping stones were set into the roads at intervals so that people could cross without getting dirty,"--Pompeii, by Peter Connolly.
