View of large oven from one of the 20 bakeries uncovered at Pompeii, Italy, most often used for baking bread. "Bread for the Romans, like so many ancient peoples, was a staple and one of the main sources for nutrition. Most people obtained their bread from communal bakeries, though those with large households might have had ovens of sufficient size to produce the requisite heat for baking,"--Artifacts from Ancient Rome, by James B.
