Description
Detail view of wooden columns at the Phoenix Hall at Byodoin Temple in Kyoto, Japan. "The galleries to each side of the center chapel form freestanding open arcades with turrets at each end. Each gallery measures 5 bays, or approximately 46 feet from north to south, and three bays, or approximately 29 and 1/2 feet along its eastern extension,"--from "The Phoenix Hall at Uji and the symmetries of replication" by Mimi Hall Yiengpruksawan, in Art Bulletin, December 1, 1995.
