Description
View of the reconstructed west front of the Great Altar of Zeus in Pergamon, Turkey. "The altar proper was on an elevated platform, framed by an Ionic stoa-like colonnade with projecting wings on either side of a broad central staircase. All along the altar platform was a sculpted frieze almost 400 feet long, populated by about one hundred larger-than-life figures. The subject is the battle of Zeus and the gods against the giants,"--Gardner's Art through the Ages: The Western Perspective, Volume 1, by Fred Kleiner.
