Interior view of a reconstructed tholos tomb from Casale Marittimo in Italy. Gordon Bugbee Collection. "These beehive tombs (tholos) have no doubt inherited structural traditions from the Mycenaen Age or from yet earlier primitive constructions both of the Mediterranean countries and of Asia Minor. In any case the corbelled dome is another monumental type which appears fully developed in Italy,"--Etruscan and Early Roman Architecture, by Axel Boëthius.
