Description

View of an Aeolic capital from a building in Larisa, Greece. "Whether or not the Aeolic capital gave birth to the Ionic, its own origin is probably to be found in Asiatic and Egyptian types. Decoratively it is simply a variety of the famous "palmette" pattern which the Minoan Cretans seemed to have borrowed from Egypt and which the Greeks of the seventh and sixth centuries obtained afresh from oriental sources,"--Greek and Roman Architecture, by D. S. Robertson.
