Description
Section of painted terra cotta metope from the Temple of Apollo at Thermos. "The ornate rosette patterns and rendering of human figures suggest Corinthian artists. An inscription identifies the figure on the right as Chelidon (later known as Philomela), the mythical maiden who was raped and mutilated by her sister's husband, and who exacted her revenge by feeding him his son,"--Panorama of the Classical World, by Nigel Spivey, Michael Squire.
