Interior view of stairwell with stairs leading to two floors at the Colgate-Palmolive Company Toilet Articles Building in Kansas City, Kansas, designed by Albert Kahn Associates c. 1951. “Colgate-Palmolive was formed in New York City in 1806. Colgate merged with the company in 1928. The company officially changed its name to Colgate-Palmolive Co. in 1953,”—Colgate-Palmolive set to close KCK Plant, Kansas City Business Journal, September 29, 2006.

An account of the resource
View of stairs leading up to Plaza of the Thousand Columns with square columns at Chichen Itza, Mexico. “The main characteristic of this structure are the ample vaulted spaces held up by columns. It is probable that the function of this plaza was civic and religious. Its construction is dated in the Late Classic-Early Post Classic periods. It has a drainage system that gathers water and stores it in a natural depression northeast of the plaza. Besides the main buildings, there are approximately 40 plinths (bases or foundations) which were built with stone from the buildings already in disuse in the plaza. These are the remains of constructions built of perishable materials and must have served very different purposes than the original buildings since the spaces are very much reduced, perhaps as a center for humble inhabitants, living amidst the ruins of what was once a great city,”—Site placard.

Description

Description
An account of the resource
Detail view of concrete stairs at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, designed by Louis Kahn and completed in 1966. "The foremost aspect of the exterior of the Salk Institute is its reinforced concrete construction. Kahn was more than masterful in his use of concrete for the institute, even experimenting with several types and mixtures before settling on a final product. Special attention was paid to the board-forming process and the forms the process left in the concrete,"--Louis Kahn's Salk Institute Pre-Modern Influences in Kahn's Work by Josh Mollman, Indiana University website.
