An account of the resource
View of the entrance to Handelshof a trading palace built in 1908-1909 in Leipzig, Germany, with high relief sculpture of a man and woman standing on pedestals on opposite sides of the entrance, above reliefs of faces. Above the lintel is a figure (cherub?) atop a horse. The architects who designed the building were Georg Weidenbach and Richard Tschammer and the sculptor was Bruno Wollstadter. The building suffered heavy damage during allied bombing raids in World War II but was renovated and is now The Steigenberger Grandhotel Handelshof. Photo by Detroit architect, Albert Kahn. Description
An account of the resource
View of sculpted head of jaguar atop the Platform of Skulls at Chichen Itza, Mexico. “The jaguar was sacred to the ancient Maya, who placed it at the center of their mythology. To them, the jaguar lived in the underworld each night, only to be reborn each day as the Sun god, who traveled across the sky during the day and descended once again. The spots on the jaguar’s skin came to represent the stars of the night sky,”-- Jungle of the Maya, By Douglas Goodell, Jerry Barrack, Jim Wright, 2006.

An account of the resource
Detail view of feathered serpent at the bottom of El Castillo at Chichen Itza in Mexico. "Devising a 365-day calendar was just one feat of Maya science. Incredibly, twice a year on the spring and autumn equinoxes, a shadow falls on the pyramid in the shape of a serpent. As the sun sets, this shadowy snake descends the steps to eventually join a stone serpent head at the base of the great staircase up the pyramid’s side,"--National Geographic website.

Description
An account of the resource
Detail view of serpent sculpture at the bottom of El Castillo in Chichen Itza, Mexico. "The excellent acoustics from the top temple on the pyramid and the vast plaza space around the base suggest this was a place for preaching. The leaders atop the pyramid held the sacred priesthood of the serpent and preached to the people below. The sacred serpent begins at this upper temple, carved into the two round pillars. The carving slithers down the balustrades to the base in a way that symbolizes sacred messages being delivered to the people. The temple is situated so that the corner of the pyramid casts a shadow on the solstice that moves throughout the day in a slithering motion. The balustrade at the base ends with enormous serpent heads,"--El Castillo Pyramid, Chichen Itza, by Benjamin Blankenbehler, January 22, 2016 from Architecture Revived website.

An account of the resource
View of sculpture by Alexander Liberman at the Meijer Sculpture Gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan. "Standing more than 42 feet enabling viewers to walk around and through the work, Aria clearly references the artist’s admiration for architecture. An "aria" is an elaborate melody sung by one voice. The organic shaped elements of Aria seems to suggest music notes, while linear elements seem to reference a music staff or interlocking sounds with the color red unifying the composition"--Meijer Sculpture Gardens website.

View of seated male figure sculpture on a pedestal, with the back of other male figure in foreground, by Hanneke Beaumont at the Meijer Sculpture Gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Themes include melancholy, courage and the universality of making tough decisions. “Typically, themes that all people everywhere have to deal with once or another time in their life,” Beaumont said. “I think a lot of people will recognize some of the feelings that I try to express in my sculptures.” Beaumont said she does not try to lead audiences toward any specific interpretation of her work, however"--grbj.com

Description
An account of the resource
View of seated male figure sculpture on a pedestal, with the back of other male figure in foreground, by Hanneke Beaumont at the Meijer Sculpture Gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan. "Beaumont explores a variety of themes in her work, some of which are grouped together.
