Byodoin Temple

LTU-TOJ-1264.jpg

Fujiwara Yorimichi (992-1074) built the Phoenix Hall to serve as the Amida Hall (houses a statue of the Buddha) for his villa. The hall faces a pond and is meant to resemble a phoenix about to fly. This Shinden style temple reflects the elegance of the Chinese style in rich opulent colors seated near water. The gardens which cover about 1/2 of the temple precinct consist of four sections: south, west, middle and east. The west, middle and east gardens, designed by Ueji, feature Garyukyo, a series of stepping stones that formerly were parts of a bridge pier, a covered bridge (Taiheikaku) and Shobikan (guest house).
